The Communion of Saints For the Week March 26 – April 1 2017
Of the three names for this week in the compilation ‘For All the Saints’ published by the Diocese of Toronto in 1994, the best known is the Jacobean poet and priest, John Donne.  After a riotous youth and a secret marriage, Donne was ordained in 1615 and became Dean of St.Paul’s Cathedral in London in 1622.  His eloquent sermons based on his wide scholarship drew large crowds but his passionate poetry is better known.  One of John Donne’s most famous poems is ‘For whom the bell tolls’, derived from Meditation 17 in a series ‘Devotions upon Emergent Occasion’ (1624):

No man is an island / Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent / A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea / Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own / Or of thine friends’ were. Each man's death diminishes me / For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know / For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.
